Mean And Mode

 Mean and Mode

These 3 "M"s are three different subparts of the term 'average'. Average is calculated in many fields apart from maths as well, data science, economics and even statistics. There are three different ways of calculating average.

Mean

The most common way to calculate average is the mean. To find the mean, we use 2 steps only!

Let us take another larger sample set of data and do a worked example.

2,4,4,4,5,5,7,9.

These are our numbers and we have to calculate the mean.

1.) 2+4+4+4+5+5+7+9= 40

2.) There are 8 different numbers here. The mean equals 40 divided by 8 which is 5!

Mode

Mode is the simplest of all! All you have to do is identify which number repeats itself the most, if there is more than one number that repeats itself the same number of times, there simply is no mode.

So, taking the same sample set of data: 2,4,4,4,5,5,7,9.

The mode here will be 4 as it is being repeated thrice which is the highest number of times.

Questions:

Find the mean and mode of the following:

1. 3.4.6.5,4,4,5,6,7,2

Answer: mean=4.6 and mode=4

2. 2,2,3,4,5,6,8,8,5,9

Answer: mean= 5.2 and mode= no mode
